Turkey Could Be Next Country Banning Online Casino Sites
1 Feb 2007
It seems now as the US isn't the only country considering banning online casino sites from their territory. According to a report from last week, Turkey could be the next one, as the government is likely to introduce restrictions concerning online casino sites in the country. The plan came as a surprise to many, as Turkey has hosted in the past land based casinos, which attracted millions of tourists and helped the country's economy grow. There's no doubt that the decision made by the Turks could influence other countries in the region to follow by.According to a local newspaper, authorities in Turkey claim that the online casino industry is "denigrating Turkishness, the republic, the institutions and organs of the state". Right now, the government's plan is to propose a law that will censor online casinos and block any site that promotes online gambling. If the law does come to a resolution, it will be practically impossible for the Turkish people to play at online casino sites. The law will also apply to several other sites, as it will mainly combat child abuse and indecent broadcasting, making the addition of online casinos to the list a bit odd.
The "anti-online casino" law is already being debated all across Turkey, having many supporters and opposers. Several people opine that it's not the government's job to protect online casino gamblers from themselves, voices that are pretty similar to those being heard in the US, concerning the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. One way or another, in the next weeks we will surely learn of the direction that the Turkish government chose to take.
